Apple MacBook Air 2023 arrives with one huge upgrade alongside incredibly powerful Mac Studio and Mac Pro computers
Everything you need to know about the three new Apple computers
Not all the big WWDC news was about Vision Pro or the new iOS 17 software update. There was great news for Mac fans as well.
The US technology giant uncovered a huge upgrade of its most popular laptop MacBook Air. The new model is the first Air notebook with a 15.3in display. That's the biggest yet in an Air and puts it on par with the MacBook Pro machines.
Apple also introduced an M2 Ultra powered Mac Studio machine and the first Mac Pro to feature the firm's own silicon. The transition from Intel to Mac Silicon is now complete.
The 15in MacBook Air will cost €1,649), the M2 Ultra powered Mac Studio computer is priced from €2,449 and the Mac Pro computer starts at €8,499. All arrive in stores and to pre-order customers on June 13.
The 15.3in MacBook Air's extra screen real estate will make this new notebook perfect for those who need more room to work, play games and binge on boxsets.
The Liquid Retina screen sports 500nits of brightness and one billion colours for a stunning viewing experience.
The firm said that despite its massive size, the Air remains super portable. In fact, it weighs in at under 1.5Kg, super light in comparison to the 2.16kg 16in MacBook Pro. It's also just 11.5mm thin which the company said makes it the world's thinnest 15-inch laptop.
Head under its toughened aluminium shell and it's powered by Apple's supremely powerful M2 silicon which means it will easily cope with tasks such as 4K video editing, photo retouching and answering endless emails.
Other features include an impressive full HD 1080p webcam, MagSafe charging, two USB-C ports and 18-hour battery life.
The 15-inch MacBook Air also features a six-speaker sound system with two tweeters and two sets of force-cancelling woofers.
It will arrive in numerous colours including Midnight and Starlight.
The 13in MacBook Air from 2022 now starts at €1349 - a huge price reduction of €180 on its launch price. You can read my review here.
Apple has updated its Mac Studio desktop system with M2 Max and the new M2 Ultra chips. The miniature desktop Mac Studio has the same design as last year's M1-powered device but much more powerful processors inside. The updated Mac Studio will start at €2449.
M2 Ultra is "a monster of a chip", according to the company. It's essentially two M2 Max chips connected with Apple's UltraFusion technology. You get a 24-core CPU and up to a 76-core GPU that's 30 percent faster than the M1 Ultra.
M2 Ultra supports up to 192GB of unified memory, 50 percent more than the M1 Ultra. In total, there is 800GB/s of memory bandwidth available, along with a 32-core neural engine.
Mac Studio with M2 Ultra supports up to six Pro Display XDRs, driving over 100 million pixels.
Mac Studio is also available in an M2 Max configuration with a 12-core CPU, up to 38-core GPU, and up to 96GB of unified memory with 400GB/s of memory bandwidth.
These numbers should mean impressive performance improvements in creative apps on macOS.
Apple has finally brought its own silicon to its highest end machine, Mac Pro which is for the first time available in a rack or tower design. The rack model is only slightly more expensive.
The super computer will be powered by M2 Ultra just like Mac Studio above.
Apple's most expensive M2 Ultra Mac Pro is around €40,000 less expensive than the maxed-out Intel model from 2019 which cost in excess of €50,000.
The top spec rack mounted 2023 Mac Pro costs just €14,307.98.
"We’re thrilled to introduce the first 15-inch MacBook Air. With its incredible performance and striking design, the new MacBook Air is the world's best 15-inch laptop. And it's only possible with Apple silicon," said John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.
"From its expansive Liquid Retina display and remarkably thin and fanless design, to extraordinary battery life and an immersive six-speaker sound system, the new MacBook Air has it all.
"The new Mac Studio and Mac Pro with Apple silicon are the two most powerful Macs we’ve ever made. Mac Studio has been a breakthrough for pros everywhere, and it's at the heart of hundreds of thousands of home and pro studios across the world. Today, it gets even better with M2 Max and the new M2 Ultra, featuring even more performance and enhanced connectivity.
"And for those users who need the versatility of internal expansion, Mac Pro combines PCIe slots with our most powerful chip."
