KCPD: Downtown standoff started after disturbance at apartment complex

Kansas City police were involved in a standoff in downtown Kansas City.'

Police say they have made a decision to not escalate the situation and have ended the negotiator response.

NorthPoint Development, the owners of the Power and Light Apartments, issued this statement:

At approximately 2:30 PM today, June 6th, our property management team responded to a noise complaint at the Power & Light Apartments, which led to local law enforcement being called to the scene. Law enforcement officers were able to de-escalate the situation and bring in their negotiator response team to offer help to the resident. No injuries were reported.Our top priority is always our residents and team members. We are continuing to do everything we can to assist local law enforcement and our residents.

ORIGINAL STORY

Officers were called to a disturbance at around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the 100 block of W. 14th Street.

A spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department said there was a "disturbance between a tenant and apartment manager."

The resident came out with what appeared to be a weapon. The individual did not point the firearm at officers.

Police have closed off portions of 14th Street from Broadway Blvd. to Main Street, along with several smaller segments of 13th Street.

Police are encouraging everyone to avoid the area of the 100 block of 14th Street, which is near the Kansas City Power and Light District.

Officers are trying to de-escalate the situation. There's no one else in the apartment complex, according to police.

They are in touch with the resident's family and the Kansas City Police Department's Crisis Intervention team has been called.

There are no reported injuries at this time.
